Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn is back with her spin-off movie, titled Birds of Prey.
We wouldn’t dare think of her as a doll–she’s Team Taylor and believes Hello Kitty to be fashionable; but, there’s that mortal danger she brings with her, which really does it for us. Harley Quinn is coming back, and this time she’s ready to fly.
Margot Robbie, in a recent interview, announced the character’s spin-off, which is all set to begin filming from January next year. Titled Birds of Prey, the movie is speculated to be produced on a much smaller budget than what is usually undertaken for a DC movie.
As the titular character and producer of the movie, Margot has delved in to narrate Quinn’s story. And she has her vision all sketched: Margot is looking for diverse characters to play the leads in the spin-off. “Real life isn’t so one specific image,” she said. “We’ve got to reflect that onscreen.” Also, the movie’s jumping from PG-13 bracket to the bold R-rated space.
In a bid to justify her character’s depiction, Birds of Prey is slated to be an all-female gang’s story. In an interview with Collider, Quinn mentioned her creative contribution in the pre-production stage, "I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl-gang film including Harley, because I was like, 'Harley needs friends.' Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film. She's got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So, that was always a big part of it."
Based on DC’s eponymous comic series, it has Harley Quinn pairing up with the likes of Black Canary and Barabar Gordon. However, no casting has been done yet for its cinematic rendition. Margot Robbie is just getting started–she has three more movies as Harley Quinn in her contract. Don’t forget: Jared Leto’s Joker also recently got a green light for a spin-off, and we can’t wait to set our eyes on their pre-Suicide Squad days.
