We're starting the year with a bang as Bollywood's favourite girl-next-door, Yami Gautam, makes her Maxim debut.
Welcome to Maxim!
Thank you! I think it was maximum fun and I had a great time shooting the theme with the team we had!
And the pictures look amazing. Maxim’s turned 12 years old!
Getting into your teens now...don’t get too naughty!
We'll try. What’s keeping you busy these days?
I'm on the verge of finalising my next project and I'm scouting to buy a home right now.
Nice! How many languages can you speak?
I speak Hindi, English, Pahari, Punjabi and French.
Wow, that's five more than us. Are you a fan of action films?
Love them! Especially kung fu action movies.
Can we look forward to an action role for you soon?
I would love to do it! I think that would be really cool. I'm inclined towards doing some action in a costume drama as a warrior princess or maybe something slick like Angelina Jolie in Salt. Or my all-time favourite, Wonder Woman!
You'd make an amazing warrior princess, no doubt. Your dream movie project would involve?
Me all-in-one as actor, director, writer and producer! (laughs) I'll let you know once the dream comes true. I don’t want to speak of it before and jinx it.
Our lips are sealed. What’s the best piece of relationship advice you’ve ever received?
My parents have always told me to listen to my own instinct and not take anyone else's advice. So I try to follow that.
Do you think men find it hard to approach you?
I only have college memories of this. I remember there used to be whispers behind my back that some of them were scared to approach me. I think it's because I blasted a guy once. But that's hardly a reason to get scared, right? (laughs)
Blast away! What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for anyone?
I baked a cake! I think cooking is a pretty romantic gesture!
You come across as a slightly shy/reserved person. Is that who you are when the cameras are on as well?
I am a reserved girl...that’s my personality! But when cameras are on, you can't work with those inhibitions in mind. Having said that, as an actor I have certain sensibilities that I prefer abiding by and don’t shy away from voicing that.
Do you appreciate a good challenge?
That’s everyday life isn't it? Whether you appreciate it or not, you can’t escape it. To face it or run away is up to you—that’s who you are as a person.
That's true. When do you feel sexiest and why?
When I shoot for Maxim (laughs) and when I dance.
Would you ever want to explore playing the bad guy in a project?
Yes! I would love to play the badass!
Do you have any secret skills that we don’t know about?
I was a pretty good mimic in school.
We've gotta test that soon. What’s your take on celebrities on social media?
Do you see the situation changing for women in the movie business—in terms of equal opportunity and pay?
It already is with the kind of roles and broader opportunities that are being made available now. I don’t know about pay but I feel it’s very subjective.
How do you deal with the pressure of being watched all the time?
To be honest, one should just enjoy it and not take it very seriously.
What are you watching on TV these days?
I download and watch shows while I'm travelling. I'm currently enjoying Stranger Things and Californication.
Californication is the bomb. Your current girl crush?
Victoria Beckham, she's so stylish and classy.
