In Your Face

Don’t let the sun and the grime hide your inner radiance. (Let your drunken behaviour do that.) We got renowned cosmetologist Dr. Jamuna Pai of Blush Clinic, Mumbai, to give us some ingredient insights. Plus, the best new skincare products out there.

Corn in body lotions and soaps

Says Dr. Pai, “Corn meal and cob powder have exfoliating properties. Hydrolysed corn starch and corn glycerides act as a humectant—increase the moisture content of the skin’s top layers.”

Kaolin in products for oily skin

“Kaolin is basically a clay-like mineral that has excellent absorbent qualities. It can draw out impurities and toxins, thereby clearing the skin of excess oil and dirt.”

Glycolic acid in acne products

“A type of alpha hydroxy acid that’s derived from sugar cane. It has the ability to penetrate the skin’s surface and can promote the production of collagen for more youthful skin. Its exfoliating properties also make it a good candidate for creams for hyperpigmentation, scarring and age spots.”

Stearic acid in face cleansers

“This is a fatty acid found naturally in cocoa and shea butters and has the ability to reduce the surface tension of water, allowing it to mix with oil and dirt on the surface of the skin and remove them effectively.”

Lemongrass in skin ointments

“A herb native to india and sri lanka, it has anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and astringent qualities. It constricts the skin thus minimising the pores, limiting the secretion of oil and providing a temporary skin-firming treatment.”
